MARTYRDOM OF AN ERUDITE ISLAMIC SCHOLAR

Full Title - SHEIKH JA’AFAR MAHMUD ADAM: MARTYRDOM OF AN ERUDITE ISLAMIC SCHOLAR

“The best among mankind is he who brings benefit to others” • Prophet Muhammad, (P.U.B.H).

Certainly life is living on a loan that must be pay back but the demise of an Islamic scholar of international repute like Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam who was assassinated by unknown gunmen in the early hours of Friday 13th April, 2007 while leading the early Morning Prayer (Subhi) at the Dorayi Juma’at Mosque in Kano is shocked and a great loss not only to Nigerian Muslim ummah but to the entire Muslim world. Late Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam, a graduate of the prestigious Islamic University Madina, kingdom of Saudi Arabia would continue to remain fresh in the minds of the ummah because he was a man remarkable in several respect, he was intelligent, friendly, good mannered, understanding, amiable, humble, fearless vanguard of Islam and masses and above all God fearing. Late Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam remained one of the few Islamic scholars that are decent, reliable, trustworthy and credible opposition to all anti-Islamic policies of government at the three rung local, state and national as well as international scene. His sincerity, frankness and fairlessness in telling truth to power made him far above his contemporaries. Sheikh Ja’afar was a detribalized Islamic scholar; he never reduced himself to ethnic or tribal differences. He also committed his entire life to the propagation of Islam within and outside Nigeria. The loss of the Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam will be felt by the good people of Borno State more than the good people of Kano State (the deceased’s home state) for several reasons. This because, Late Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam, brings benefit to many in several ways. His annual Ramadan Tafsir (Qur’anic commentary) in the famous Indimi Mosque along Damboa road in Maiduguri for the past 14 years was remarkable. His Tafsir is the talk of the town and attracted large crowd. People migrated from far and near to listen to his Tafsir. He also led the Tahajjud at the last ten days of the Holy month of Ramadan. Late Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam also presented many papers on diverse topics in Maiduguri for more than a decade in places like, University of Maiduguri, School of Nursing, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Ramat Polytechnic Maiduguri amongst others. He also delivered Tafsir for women in the famous Indimi Mosque in Maiduguri. Late Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam’s tremendous contribution to scholarship did not left even the inmate in custody. It was late Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam who initiated the visitation to prison yards in Maiduguri by the Muslim ummah especially during the Holy-Month of Ramadan. He led the Muslim ummah to deliver lecture and donated clothes, foodstuffs which the Muslim ummah contributed. The visits to prison yard especially during Ramadan fast have since become annual events. Inmates in the Maximum Security Prison and New prison Maiduguri will greatly missed Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam, Islamic scholar of repute. This writer often wondered why anyone for whatever reason should assassinate such a scholar and a gentleman of tremendous goodwill and immeasurable contribution to Islam and humanity. Someone who committed the whole of the Holy Qur’an to memory. Man who is more than a material not only to the Muslim ummah but to humanity. Listening to “Mallam” as Sheikh Ja’afar was popularly called in Maiduguri, this writer often asked himself whether Sheikh Ja’afar have obtained a academic qualification in political science or international relation. This because of how he (Sheikh Ja’afar) analysed domestic political events as they unfold and how he discuss national and international issues in an articulate manner. The loss of Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam at this critical time of our development when we need him most will be felt for several reasons. As Sheikh Ja’afar left this sinful world to the great beyond without even a farewell thereby throwing the Muslim world into deep mourning despair and sorrow. Those who assassinate Sheikh Ja’afar should know that “they will never get away with it Insha Allahu. This is more than evil but Alhamdulillah, Sheikh Ja’afar died a martyr.” As we mourn the demise of Sheikh Ja’afar, he will remain in our memories today, tomorrow and forever and our prayers will follow him day and night. May Allah broaden his entrance into the most elevated and choicest place in paradise Firdausi, Amen. And may He give us (the Muslim ummah) the fortitude to bear this great loss.
